iTalks on Government Innovation – How to Open Data?! Perspectives and Learnings from Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior
19 November 2025, 12:30–13:30 CET
Open data is a cornerstone of transparent, innovative, and efficient governance. But what does it actually take to make data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) in the public sector?
In this iTalk on Government Innovation, Josephine Bernickel, Open Data Coordinator and Policy Officer at the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, will share practical insights and experiences from Germany’s federal administration. Drawing on her work with ministries and agencies, she will explore what it means to apply FAIR data principles in practice – and how to overcome common challenges along the way.
From technical hurdles to cultural mindsets, the session will address both the benefits and barriers of open data. Josephine will also reflect on Germany’s shift from an “open by default” approach towards a broader “sharing by default” mindset – a transition that calls for more collaboration, clear governance, and a supportive data infrastructure.
Join us on 19 November 2025, 12:30–13:30 CET to learn how one of Europe’s largest public administrations is working to unlock the value of data for the public good.
